ATEX/IECEx Markings Explained Area Classification Equipment Category Definition Zone An area where an explosive atmosphere is present continuously or for long periods (over 1000 hours per year or >10% of the time) An area where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation (10 - 1000 hours per year or 0.1 to 10% of the time) ATEX derives its name from "ATmosphères EXplosibles" (French). An 'explosive atmosphere' is defined as a mixture with air, under atmospheric conditions of flammable substances in the form of gases, vapours, mists or dusts in which, after ignition has occurred, combustion spreads to the entire unburned mixture. The ATEX suffix always starts with Ex to indicate Explosion Protection and is then followed by 4 more sections whether it is for Gas or Dust applications. Many devices may show a separate suffix for Gas and one for Dust because they have achieved testing and certification for both hazards.
